A big red, with lots of extract. The first impression of blackberry jam changes as the wine breathes and opens up. Blackberry, black cherry and undertones of raspberry dominate the aromas and flavours with a cherry wood finish. |
|
A plush and concentrated shiraz that brims with varietal character with Victoria Tinges. Dense yet fresh aromas of blackberry, cherry, spice and hints of white pepper. A mix of ripe and tangy fruit with sweet and spicy notes. Good acidity with plenty of fruit concentration and length. |

Now to my Winery of the Year: Pretty Sally from Australia.
Pretty Sally wines ... are both elegant and balanced, a rare combo these days.
We tried the 2006 Pretty Sally Sauvignon Blanc ($17) — * * * * 1/2
— which was like a cross between a good Australian sauvignon blanc and a white Bordeaux, and the 2006 Pretty Sally Rosé
($16) — * * * * * —
which is made from cabernet sauvignon and easily the best rosé I had this year.
The 2003 Pretty Sally Cabernet Sauvignon ($24.50) — * * * * 1/2 — was much like a red Bordeaux, while the 2004 Pretty Sally Cabernet-Shiraz ($19) — * * * * 1/2 — is terrific, with a nice mint-eucalyptus nuance. And the 2004 Pretty Sally Shiraz ($25) — * * * * * — is outstanding, with a peppery quality reminiscent of a top-grade Cornas. |

"Australian wines gained their huge following by making wines with ripe jammy fruit and smooth tannins...At the same time there are others whose goal wa alwaays to produce leaner, more structured wines which serve best as companions to a meal. Pretty Sally is one of those. It does this nicely and if you are not familiar with the wines, look for them."
PS Sauvignon Blanc 2006:

Sauvignon Blanc was one of the best that we have tasted this year....The Rosé had a subdued medley of berry aromas and left a clean, fresh palate...The three red wines (CabSauv, CabShiraz, Shiraz) were remarkable too. All had deep, vibrant variations of crimson and lovely noses." |
